ABOUT THIS SERVICE

Help Limit Moisture Coming from the Ground.

In an unsealed crawl space, moisture vapor can move from exposed soil into the space beneath a home.

A ground vapor barrier is a material installed over suitable soil surfaces to reduce this moisture vapor movement. Its configuration depends on the property's construction, existing conditions and applicable requirements.

Santos AC & Insulation offers vapor barrier services. Contact our team to discuss your crawl space, describe any moisture concerns and request a free estimate.

UNDERSTANDING VAPOR BARRIERS

What Does a Vapor Barrier Do?

A vapor barrier is one component of a moisture-management approach. Its purpose and installation requirements depend on the application.

01

Ground Moisture Vapor

Exposed soil can release moisture vapor into a crawl space. A suitable ground covering helps limit this movement.

02

Barrier Material

Vapor barriers use materials selected to resist water vapor transmission. Product suitability matters.

03

Crawl Space Conditions

Soil, access, drainage and existing building materials affect installation planning.

04

Installation Details

Coverage, joints, penetrations and edge treatment should follow the selected system's requirements.

Important: A vapor barrier is not waterproofing and does not automatically correct standing water, plumbing leaks, drainage problems or existing mold. Those conditions may require separate evaluation and treatment.

BEFORE INSTALLATION

Understand Your Crawl Space Conditions.

A successful project begins with understanding where moisture may be coming from and which work is appropriate for the property.

Request Your Estimate
01

Water Sources

Standing water, plumbing leaks or drainage issues should be identified rather than covered by a barrier.

02

Existing Materials

Old coverings, debris and damaged materials may affect the preparation needed before installation.

03

Coverage & Seams

The proposed system should address coverage, joints, penetrations and perimeter details as appropriate.

04

Access & Clearance

Crawl space height, entry openings, ductwork and other obstacles can influence the work.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Vapor Barrier Questions.

Learn about ground vapor barriers and what to discuss before requesting installation.

Ask Our Team →
What is a crawl space vapor barrier?

A ground vapor barrier is a material installed over suitable soil surfaces to reduce water vapor moving from the ground into a crawl space.

Is a vapor barrier the same as a radiant barrier?

No. A vapor barrier is intended to control water vapor movement. A radiant barrier is designed to reduce radiant heat transfer. These materials serve different purposes.

Will a vapor barrier stop standing water?

No. A ground vapor barrier should not be used as a substitute for correcting standing water, drainage problems or plumbing leaks. The source of liquid water should be addressed separately.

Does the crawl space need cleaning first?

Preparation depends on the condition of the space. Existing debris, damaged materials or contamination may need to be addressed before barrier installation. Confirm what preparation is included in your estimate.

Is a vapor barrier the same as full encapsulation?

Not necessarily. A ground vapor barrier may cover the soil only, while a crawl space encapsulation system can involve additional components and treatment of other surfaces. Ask which system and coverage are included in the proposed work.

Will a vapor barrier remove existing mold?

No. A vapor barrier does not remove existing mold or correct every condition that causes moisture. Suspected contamination may require separate professional evaluation.
